Description | Original handwritten and typescript drafts and final version of a memorandum by Brendan [Duddy] for Martin [McGuinness, and also addressed to Gerry Adams]. Referring to his paper of 11 April 2001; discussing again the threat from the Real IRA and further splits (the death of David Caldwell), and from Loyalist groups; advocating effective measures to bridge the gap between advancing nationalism and retreating unionism. (With a caption by Éamonn Downey. See POL35/484 for comments on the differences between drafts. Also marking that this paper ought to be seen in the light of an Irish Times article (2 August) and a B.B.C. radio programme (4 August), both concerning Denis Bradley and his views. Drafts are in Duddy's and Downey's hands and show evolution of the document over many stages; it appears corrections made by Duddy on what is called the 'final draft (pre-print)' were not realised in the 'final draft (post-print)' [POL35/419]). |
