Reflections on character of Northern Irish; reflections on his own role; comments on PIRA members Billy McKee, Séamus Twomey, Secretary of State Roy Mason; comments on the Catholic church, the prison service. 2nd part. Events early 1981 - July 1981. Particular assessment of Sands and his defiance of the Provisional movement; detailed treatment of meeting bringing about the prisoners' statement of 4 July, and following impasse.
